For Good Works (Friday and Saturday Part 2)
After Lunch on Friday I borrowed the keys and took a quick nap in the Tahoe. Time really flies when you are exhausted. I ran (kind of lumbered really) back in to the Worship Center and took a seat, ready to enjoy Mark Dever. His topic was regarding the leadership of the Church. Mr. Dever noted that today we have a "fraying leadership across most Evangelical Churches". They are not sure whom should be leading or even what would be their purpose if they could agree on a leader. Part of his emphasis was to stress the need to be active in opposing false teaching and leading a peaceful and quiet life. He then pointed out we need to contemplate why it is that false teaching is so attractive. Understanding why people get swept up will help us do a better job of combating the false teachers. In closing, Mr. Dever expanded on the commands regarding how wrong it is to use any ministry to pursue sordid gain.
Jason went over to the Master's College for some materials. It was snacks for everyone else. As we were milling around in the breezeway, Rod sent us an invitation for dinner at
Barone's for pizza. We had reservations there for a time right after Steve Lawson.
Dr. Lawson provided a lean and crisp message addressing the Authority of the Church. For context Steve Lawson had made two air trips this week between The Shepherd's Conference and the Ligonier Ministries Conference in an effort to support both. Can't imagine the fatigue he was under.
It was about this time that Jason picked up some G2. Seems someone among us was celebrating a special time...

Dr. Lawson opened with Eph 1:20-23 and began the process of describing the Ruling and Organic Head of the Church being Christ Jesus. His outline address leadership in terms of:
We fought quite a bit of traffic to go the ~3 miles for dinner. All of the Countryside team was there including Pastor Tom. The food was great and the fellowship was even greater. Marv was not feeling well. Jason equipped him with some Advil and he took to resting in the truck during dinner. Jason was prompt (some might call it aggressive) in returning us back to Grace for the closing ceremonies. It was standing room only. The music, the music. How can we say more? Except to point out emotional weight of Phill Webb singing How Great Thou Art. This time was made doubly special because there was lots of texting going on with our loved ones who were streaming with us. After listing to the music and Dr MacArthur illustrating in clear words the harsh terms Paul used to describe the false teachers, we were all overjoyed to be here. After being dismissed, I scooped up several copies of the first-edition printing of the Getty's new song. I will have them for Becky and others at our next Home Fellowship meeting.
On the drive back to the RVs we had several discussions regarding missions and what was the key take-away and message from the conference. Jason stated it first and we all agreed. It was from Art Azurdia; "Sanctification for missions is the achievement of the Crucifixion...". Christ is clearly the one leading, possessing and growing His Church. The means for the building however, clearly calls on missions supported by the Church for a central role.
It is 12:57PM local time and we are ~52miles West of Phoenix. Rod is taking a nap. Jason (Iron Man) is snacking on carrots and nuts with the driving duties. Kelley and I are taking turns supporting navigation actions. So much more to share-see your soon.
